Oscar 2013: Cram Session


Here is all you need to know about the Oscars nominees, surprises, and more. Just think of this as the Cliff Notes of the Oscar 2013. Let’s get started…

1.”Lincoln” is leading the pack as the biopic about the 16th president picked up 12 Academy Award nominations.

2. Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” is in second place with 11 nominations, (yes, the movie about a sixteen- year- old South Indian boy who survives out at sea with a Bengal tiger for 227 days.)

3. Round of applause to 9-year-old, Quvenzhané Wallis, for her Best Actress nomination as one of the youngest nominees ever. She played lead for “Beats of Southern Wild” which was a huge surprise in nominations for a small Sundance picture.

4. The highly sought after award of the night is ‘Best Picture’, with the nominations of

“Beasts of the Southern Wild”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Lincoln”, “Les Miserables”, “Life of Pi”, “Amour”, “Django Unchained”, and “Argo”.

5. Did you know? Winning a ‘Best Director’ Oscar this year would put Steven Spielberg in the exclusive company of Hollywood legends John Ford, Frank Capra and William Wyler, the only filmmakers to have won three or more Oscars for best director.

6. Eye candy, Bradley Cooper is nominated for Best Actor for his role “Silver Linings Playbook,” this is a huge come-up from the comedic roles in Hangover movies.

7. The nominations for Best Director sent most in an uproar about snubbing Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty,” Tom Hooper for “Les Miserables” and Ben Affleck for “Argo.” Just this week, all three were nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award. What do you think?

8. Did you know the Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane, is up for an Academy Award? Huh? It is for the original composition and lyrics to a piece he wrote for his movie, Ted, about a talking teddy bear.

9. The ceremony is to include a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise.

10. The Simpsons’ may be awarded by the Academy with their nomination from, “Maggie Simpson in The Longest Daycare” will compete in the Animated Shorts race.

11. D’Jango snubbed? Neither Leonardo DiCaprio nor Samuel L. Jackson make the short list for their impressive work in “Django Unchained.”

  1. The golden globes this year were the best so far, even if I hated Ferrell and that other woman’s totally unfunny speech about how they know their nominees. Here’s to hoping for the Oscars, I guess.
